DESCRIPTION
Silicon Manganese (Si-Mn) is a ferroalloy widely used in the production of steel and iron castings. It is a combination of silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), and iron (Fe) where the Si content is over 0.60% and the Mn content is between 1.5% and 3%.
Si-Mn is used in the casting industry as a deoxidizer and desulfurizer, and also to promote the formation of graphite in cast iron. A small amount of Si-Mn is added to the molten metal before pouring into the mold to enhance its properties.
The addition of Si-Mn to cast iron helps to improve its mechanical properties, such as strength and ductility. It also enhances the machinability of the cast iron by reducing its brittleness.
In addition, Si-Mn is used as an alloying agent in the production of high-strength and high-toughness steel castings. It helps to improve the hardenability, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance of the steel castings.
